Located near Stearns High School, the Millinocket ski tow likely dates back to the early 1950s.

The Hillcrest Golf Club was likely constructed in the early 1930s, with four greens constructed by September 1934.

Circa the winter of 1951-52, a portable rope tow for beginner skiers was set up by the Millinocket Recreation Committee in the vicinity of the town's athletic field and Hillcrest Golf Club. By 1953, the facility also included a toboggan run and lighting. It is not known for how long the operation continued.

The town's preeminent skiing facility was northwest of town at Black Cat Mountain.

A new Stearns High School was constructed starting in 1974 and dedicated in 1976, replacing the facility on Katahdin Avenue.

In September 2022, Millinocket town manager Peter Jamieson announced plans to obtain grant funding to "bring the ski tow back to life." By September of 2023, the project had received a $10,000 Maine WinterKids grant, $22,500 from the American Rescue Plan Act, and $22,500 from Katahdin Area Trails.

Preparations accelerated in 2024, with groundwork starting in August and the warming hut arriving in the fall. Adam Qualey Inc. donated time and equipment for the construction. Though there were plans to open the ski area for the winter of 2024-25, additional work was needed to get the rope tow operational.
